Reed Sensors application and selection guide

Reed sensors and magnetic switches detect position, level or movement through a magnetically actuated contact; operate/release distance depends on magnet, orientation, sensitivity and installation geometry.

Use this family when a sealed non-contact or magnetically actuated sensing point is required. Final magnet distance, cable length and environmental rating should be confirmed for each installation.

Pull-in and drop-out are differentActuation distance depends on magnet strength, approach direction, sensor sensitivity, housing, nearby metal and installation geometry. Allow for hysteresis between operate and release points.
The whole assembly sets the environment ratingThe reed capsule may be sealed, but IP rating, cable seal, housing material, potting and connector selection determine fluid, temperature and outdoor suitability.
Check load protectionPassive reed sensors draw no steady-state power, but switching voltage/current/wattage limits still apply. Inductive and capacitive loads may need suppression or interface circuitry.
