Reed Relays for Battery Powered Instruments
Nowadays, more and more instruments are used in locations away from conventional power sources, and these devices are battery powered only, so any electronic components used must consume very little power in order to work longer.

Reed relays can be used in harsh environments because the contacts of the reed switch are sealed in a glass body, which is very air tight and not affected by the environment such as dust and water vapor. Reed relays also have excellent insulation properties between contacts and coils and between contacts and contacts, while the contact resistance of the contacts is extremely low and stable, providing for the wide forbidden band requirements of the load circuit.

In terms of coil control loops, the required control load power is in the mW range, and there are high coil resistances available in the Micolite relay range. Also available are magnetically maintained reed relays, in which two millisecond pulses are used to close the contacts in a sequence of closures and two millisecond pulses in the opposite direction are used to open the contacts, thus minimizing power consumption and thus saving battery power.
