Application Note: High-Voltage Reed Relays in Defibrillator and Electrosurgical Equipment

High-voltage reed relays can switch compact, high-isolation paths in defibrillator charging circuits and electrosurgical equipment when the complete medical device design validates safety and reliability.

Application note based on MiRelay internal application manuscripts and product reference files. Always confirm final limits against the exact datasheet and your validation plan.

Application challenge

  • Portable defibrillators require low standby power and reliable high-voltage charging-path control.
  • Electrosurgical equipment combines high voltage, current and RF energy, raising insulation and patient-safety requirements.
  • The switch must be compact but still maintain isolation and predictable timing.

Design approach

  • Use the relay only within the medical equipment safety architecture; it is not a substitute for system-level isolation, monitoring or compliance testing.
  • For electrosurgical circuits, evaluate RF behavior, heating and creepage distance in addition to DC voltage rating.
  • For defibrillator charging paths, validate standby power, operate/release timing and high-voltage endurance over the expected maintenance life.
  • Document relay lot, test conditions and derating in the medical device design history file.
Engineering caution: catalog ratings are component-level references. For high-voltage, medical, EV, PV or ATE systems, verify creepage, clearance, leakage, thermal rise, EMC and lifetime in the finished equipment.
