Latching (Bistable) Relays
Zero Power Consumption
Standard (Monostable) relays require continuous current to the coil to keep the contacts closed. Latching (Bistable) relays use a permanent magnet biasing system.
How it Works
- Set (Close): A short voltage pulse creates a field that aids the permanent magnet, closing the reed. Once closed, the permanent magnet is strong enough to hold it closed *without power*.
- Reset (Open): A reverse polarity pulse creates a field that opposes the permanent magnet, releasing the reed.
This technology is critical for battery-powered instruments, as the relay consumes power only for the 2ms switching duration.
