Application challenge
- Hipot and dielectric-withstand testers must apply high voltage, detect breakdown or arcing, and then safely remove stored charge.
- The switching component must withstand open-circuit voltage and maintain isolation when the channel is not selected.
- A safe design often needs both a high-voltage open path and a controlled discharge or grounding path.
Design approach
- Use separate normally-open high-voltage switching and discharge/grounding functions where the safety architecture requires it.
- Coordinate relay timing with the instrument discharge algorithm so the DUT is not left charged.
- Confirm creepage, clearance and enclosure spacing for the maximum test voltage, including transient conditions.
- Add snubbers, current limiting and interlocks based on the tester topology.
